Pakistan’s news foreign secretary, second woman to hold top post

Amna Baloch is second woman to hold top post, Pakistan’s new Foreign Secretary following the retirement of Dr Syrus Sajjad Qazi. Currently serving as Ambassador to the EU, Belgium, and Luxembourg, Baloch’s appointment was approved by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. A 1991 batch Foreign Service officer with a master’s in history, she brings a wealth of experience, including prior roles in Malaysia and China.

  • Baloch was last serving as Pakistan’s ambassador to the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg
  • Before Baloch, the last and only woman to serve as foreign secretary was Tehmina Janjua from 2017-2019

A master’s degree holder in history, Baloch served as high commissioner of Pakistan in Malaysia before joining the current post and has earlier served on various assignments at the headquarters and missions abroad during her career, including as the Consul General of Pakistan at Chengdu in China.
