Report by: Suhail Sundoo
The Ambassador of Denmark to Pakistan, Ms Maja Derrous Mortensen, met with Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr Musadik Malik, at the Ministry of Climate Change in Islamabad.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed the role of science diplomacy in addressing global climate challenges, as well as the implications of current international political developments for global climate action and climate finance.
Dr Musadik Malik highlighted that climate change disproportionately affects countries in the Global South. He further noted that nearly 70 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions originate from just ten countries, while approximately 85 percent of total global climate finance is received by those same countries.
The Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s continued commitment to advancing sustainable climate solutions and underscored joint plans to establish a green university. The initiative aims to strengthen collaborative climate research and promote exchange programmes for students and faculty between Pakistan and international partners.
Both sides reaffirmed their intention to further strengthen cooperation in the areas of climate action, research, and science diplomacy going forward.
